In his retirement, he maintained a small practice in Belleville, and was on the staff at nearby Clara Maass Medical Center. He treated coronavirus patients at the field hospital until a week before he was hospitalized. When he could no longer breathe on his own, medical staff at Clara Maass placed him on a ventilator.
